This page is dedicated to Figwit — a mysterious unnamed elf who first appeared in Lord of the Rings as a background character that quickly gained popularity and garnered many fans throughout the early 2000s. This page seeks to honor that history by showcasing old internet goodness in the form of pictures, gifs, magazine/newspaper scans, official merchandise, articles, and fan content in general.

My biggest thanks and upmost appreciation to the first Figwit fansite ever www.figwitlives.net which is still online today! Most of the content here is from wonderful fans who shared their works and finds there.

Everything else has been found on archived fansites, forums, eBay listings, and the internet in general unless stated otherwise. For many reasons I won't have fanart, fanfiction, or fansongs on here but I will link to where to find them.

Thanks for visiting this little shrine of mine, I hope Figwit lives on in your hearts!

Introduction

Figwit, also known as Melpomaen, Lothvaen, Aegnor, or simply 'Figgy', is the fanmade name given to an elf extra played by Bret McKenzie in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001). When premiere movie-goers noticed a certain elf sitting beside Aragorn in Elrond's Council, they took to the early internet to discuss this mysterious and handsome elf, and from then Figwit would rise in popularity and soon come to have his own fanpages, websites, and content such as fanfiction and fanart.

McKenzie later reappears as "elf escort" to Lady Arwen in Return of the King (2003), having been asked to return due to his unprecidented popularity. He became so popular in fact that a documentary called Frodo Is Great... Who Is That?!! (2004) was made about Figwit's rise to fame and the fans who helped make it happen. Directed by Hannah Clarke (McKenzie's then-girlfriend now-wife), it also features behind-the-scenes Flight of the Conchords tour footage and cameos from LOTR cast-members. It is what brought my attention to the Figwit phenomenon and goes a ton into the history behind it. It's a heartfelt-telling of early internet/fandom — and is a must-watch for any fan and anyone curious to know more. It is available to watch on Youtube and Internet Archive.

You can read more about Figwit on his Wikipedia, LOTR Wikia, Figwitlives.net (the original Figwit fansite), and in various articles listed on this page.

This is simply a dedication and a show of appreciation for a time that has come to pass, as well as a love letter to old internet/fandom in general.

I did not want the love for Figwit and the content that came from it to be lost to the ever-aging internet. I'm not sure how to archive and preserve these properly — but everything displayed here is kept on my Neocities and most files should have their original file name.

Download to your hearts content and display Figwit on your own sites and profiles!

Should you be interested in content such as fanart and fanfiction, I encourage you to go out and explore for yourself — who knows what you might find!
